Who cares about Blackjack: it's a historical text April 22, 2010 M. Olenick (Boca Raton, FL) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book for my son who is four years ahead in his age level in math to show him that math can be used for fun. Who knows and who cares about Blackjack anymore: Beat the Dealer is widely recognized as the book that kicked off modern financial modeling and started the "hunger" in plenty of those who control the world financial markets for applying their math heads to something concrete. I don't know if I'd put it up there w/ Turing's paper about binary theory but it's close. That it's written entirely focused on Blackjack, and then on gaining a theoretical upper hand in a game where even the highest stakes tables may as well be nickel bets compared to what flows through the financial sector, makes it even more interesting.
"Las Vegas Here I Come",a classical book by the now Blackjack Hall of Famer professor Edward O. Thorp. February 17, 2010 M. Mariba (south africa) This book is well written, honesty of the authour shines throughout & the book is very accessiable to the general public, remember Edward O. Thorp is a Mathematics professor. The book is made "alive" by throwing in actual casino experiences right throughout, this is great as academics are often tempted to be very theoretical. The mixture of theory & practice is well balanced.Despite being a first definitive book on blackjack,50 years later the book is still a good read despite casino rule & game changes that occured over time.A must to all who would like to know evolution of the game of 21,this is where it all began.A detailed account on cheating by casinos at the end of the book is very interesting & an eye-opener as to what some casinos might do including tax evasion! Classical book of great magnitude!

Blackjack for dummies! July 31, 2008 Sharon Odonnell (Portland, OR) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was an entertaining read. Edward Thorp did a lot of research :) and his stories are hysterical. His method of playing blackjack is easy to learn...even for somebody over 50! :)
