Product Description

From the sun-scorched sands of the Kalahari to the snake-infested jungles of the Amazon, Les Stroud has made a life of surviving in the harshest—and most remote—regions on Earth.

Now, the creator, producer, and host of the hit television program Survivorman transfers his decades of knowledge and experience to the pages of Survive!, a practical guide that gives everyday readers a no-nonsense look at the real world of survival.

Stroud offers readers the essential skills and tactics necessary to endure in any corner of the globe, along with a wealth of insider information born of his own experiences in the outdoors and unavailable in any other book. Readers will learn:

  • How to make a survival shelter and why a lean-to is largely a waste of time.
  • Why survival kits are important, and why you should make your own.
  • Where to find water and why drinking contaminated water is sometimes warranted.
  • How to locate and trap small animals and why the notion of tracking and hunting large game is largely a pipe dream.

Whether seasoned in the outdoor arts or new to adventuring, all readers will learn something from Survive!. Stroud's many colorful anecdotes and cut-to-the-chase philosophy not only make for an entertaining read, but also enhance anyone's ability to focus on the main goal when everything else has gone wrong—survival.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for future Survivormen and Women!   January 8, 2009
Having watched and enjoyed Survivorman on the Discovery channel for the past 3 years, I was anxious to get this book and it did not disappoint! In the book (as on TV) Les does a great job of presenting survival information for the average person. In many instances he points out that many of the survival techniques presented by other people over the years are just unrealistic in a true survival situation. Thus he presents the needed skills for survival - not wilderness living or camping. He also makes many references to his actual experiences in the bush, both from the TV show and otherwise. Les has made a life out of survival living and instruction and it all comes together in the book. Yes, some of it is common sense, but when you are in a true survival situation, common sense may escape you. Les brings all the common sense techniques together with much more detailed survival information and tips that will save you in the wild. Even if you are an experienced outdoors-person, this book will give you some good info and if nothing else is a very entertaining read from an experienced and inspirational survivalist.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Well Done   January 7, 2009
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I have read several survival manuals over the past few years, and while many are very good, the catch with a lot of these books is that they try to pack absolutely everything one might need to know in a survival situation into one book. The result is that the reader is forced to parse through the entire book and pick out the things that they might find both usable and pertinent in a potential survival situation. These books end up being 40% useful information and 60% extraneous information; that while interesting, would never and could never be used by 99.9% of the book's potential readers (such as fletching your own bush made arrows, and building an igloo or a log cabin).

Stroud's book is the exception. It is written with an eye towards the realistic, the possible and the likely. He has boiled down the tremendous amount of information out there and presented the skills and tricks a person is both likely to need in the "typical" survival situation, and likely to remember and accomplish when lost, tired, cold and hungry. This book is an easy and enjoyable read, the content is well organized and accessible, and as I mentioned, the material is not bogged down with extraneous information more suited for the hard core survivalist than the average outdoor enthusiast looking for a core group of skills for emergency situations. This is a great and useful book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!   January 5, 2009
I will be short. If you like Les on Survivorman in any capacity, you will love this book. If you would like to learn about basic survival skills, you will love this book. It is very informative with step by step instructions even the outdoor beginner can follow. Very fun to read. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars excellent   January 5, 2009
I love this book, I watch Survivorman and love his show learned allot from it, I am new to learning Survival skills and this book is great. I thinks it is important to learn survival skill if your going to be outdoors. thanks Les for writing a wonderful book it will go with me anytime I am out in the woods. I only read a couple of survival books but most of the stuff was not very clear to me and I was confused, but Les's book is very clear and the pictures and drawing are great. I know now if I am ever in a survival situation I have a fighting chance of making it out alive. with Les's book with me, it would be like having Survivorman with me. I can hardly wait to practice the skills when I go camping.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal!   December 31, 2008
This is the best book I have seen on the fundamentals of survival! I got it for Christmas and it is the first survival book, that I sat down and read cover to cover! Usually, with other survival books I scan them and pick out individual sections to read more carefully. I read every page in this one including the index! (Yes, it even has an excellent index!)

I have a collection of books on survival techniques and most of them have just copied from the Army Survival Manual and from each other. This is the first I have seen with such a unique and practical, down to earth survival philosophy.

Les doesn't try to go into advanced survival techniques, but instead opts for the best of the simple and most effective techniques for everything from making a fire to building a shelter or gathering food. Anyone who learns and practices the techniques in this book will be well prepared to deal with a survival emergency.

An example of Les' down-to-earth approach is in fire building. He goes over the standard wilderness fire starting techniques, such as flint-and steel and the fire bow. However his answer to the question of which is his favorite technique for a survival situation is "a butane lighter!".

I've never been in a "real" survival situation, but I do practice the survival techniques I have learned when I am out camping or hiking, or even in the back yard. I know enough about survival in the outdoors to recognize the genuine thing. Les has "been there and done that" and knows what he is talking about.

I worry a lot about some of the other TV shows on "survival" that are more entertainment and fantasy driven. It bothers me to think that some might try to follow the example of some of these other hosts. Not so with Les. Following HIS example and using the techniques in this book will give you your best chance to get out of a survival situation alive!
