Essential Primary Go +++ December 7, 2009 Kevin Kiersky (Olympia, WA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I would call this manual "Essential Primary Go". It really does present the essential primary patterns of Go-play. As Go is very much a visual game of geometric patterns, this is a compact, concise and precise quide to essential primary Go. Yet, the standard elements of Go-play are indeed presented -- with some core strategy and tactics. This book is especially great as a stand-alone manual on Go. With a small portable Go-set and this book, I was able to practice just about anywhere. I later had access to a number of other books -- which seemed quite specialized in comparison to "Go for Beginners" -- and still do. Many folks will now prefer more current basic sets of Go books -- but if you work well learning on your own with minimal help -- this book is a fine aid, along with playing-out the patterns on a board -- and, of course, playing opponents when possible. My copy of this little manual has lasted decades +++
Go for Beginners Book Fell Apart July 14, 2008 Toni Lupo 0 out of 14 found this review helpful
Book was used and showed signs of discoloring. After a couple of uses of book for reference- pages began to fall out.
MAYBE A BIT TOO ADVANCED July 4, 2008 Cesar Diaz (Bogota, COLOMBIA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read Yasunari Kawabata's "The Master of Go" a couple of months ago, and I was so thrilled by the novel and so puzzled to know what this game was about, that I bought a 13x13 goban (the only size available in my country right now) , and I ordered immediately Cho Chikun's "Go: A Complete introduction To The Game" and Iwamoto's "Go for Beginners". I started with this book, and quite soon I had to stop: it was just a little bit too much for a real beginner, and sometimes, diagrams were hard to read because the print has some minor flaws. I gave this book four stars though, because actually it IS a great book, but the problem is: it's hard to read for someone who starts from zero. So, Once I'm done with Cho Chikun's own primer, I'll go back to Iwamoto's little book. Then, I think, I'll have the muscle to follow the explanations.
The best way to learn go November 17, 2007 Steven D. Jamar (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having played and taught go for 35 years, and having seen many books come and go, I still consider Go for Beginners to be the best book to introducing the game and to teach some of the basics. Compared to most such books, this one is actually fun with some anecdotes.
Good, a lot of content in it. July 5, 2007 Nicolas Barriga Richards 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This a very good introductory book. If you have played around 10 games and and least won some, this is probably a good book for you. It could be too hard for a total newcomer who doesn't even know the rules. For them I would recommend either learning from the web and playing a bit before, or "Learn to Play Go, Volume 1" from Janice Kim, which is a lot simpler, but shallower, so you'll want more very soon.
