not for beginners July 22, 2010 doc peterson (Portland, Oregon USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I enjoy a good game of chess, but I am far from anything approaching a formally competitive player. Still, constantly seeking to know more, Pachman's _Modern Chess Strategy_ was recommended to me. As a strategic guide, I can certainly understand its merits. The first 2/3 of the book address the individual pieces and how to position them to play to their relative strengths, thereby (naturally) strengthening one's game once the principles are understood. The final third discusses strategy in the larger context: how to gain advantagous position on the board, how to press an attack and how to utilize the principles laid out in the first several chapters. As an extreme novice, these concluding chapters were far above my head.
Yet my largerst complaint with what otherwise is an outstanding treatise on chess strategy was its use of descriptive notation (ie. "K to QB3: or "Knight to"Queen's Bishop 3 - the third rank, the file in front of the bishop on the queen's half of the board. The problem with this notation being, however, is the notation is all relative to which side of the board one views the pieces - hence its disuse), which is a bit antiquated (and to me, at least, difficult.) I am much more familiar with algebraic notation (whereby ranks are given letters, files given numbers, making one's perspective of the board irrelevant.) I am sure for those with more experience in chess this isn't an issue - for me, it was. The breadth of Pachman's knowledge and his ability to communicate his thoughts is worth reading for those who take this marvelous game seriously. For the beginner to novice player, I wouldn't recommend it.
Best One Volume Strategy Book February 24, 2010 Kerry Mcdermott (Dover, NH United States) Modern Chess Strategy is the best general chess strategy book dealing with statitcs (pawn structures, material, central formations, wing superiority etc.) for the under 2000 player. The bulk of the material deals with middle game positions, but there are also positions from endgames. For example some endgame positions are used to further explain the strengths and weaknesses and superiority or inferiority of the bishop verses the knight or to illustrate ideas involving doubled, backward or isolated pawns. For further information about more dynamic elements of the middle game such as attacking the king, Euwe and Kramer's Middle Game Book II is excellent as is Reuben Fine's The Middle Game in Chess. For more advanced study in attacking, Vucovic's Art of Attack is reported to be excellent (I have not read that book myself).
Look for a copy with the humorous cover March 17, 2009 CodeCat (The Woodlands, Texas United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Nothing really to add to what other reviewers have said, other than to say you might want to keep your eye out for a copy with the humorous cover. On the copy I have the photo on the front cover has been reversed right-to-left which produces a chess board that is set up incorrectly! Pretty funny for a book that is a classic on chess theory ...

BEST BOOK ON MIDDLEGAME May 9, 2008 thecityofjoy (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok , the word is in . This is without a doubt one of the best books on middle game and chess strategy . If you are one of those players who thinks what to move next (and I was one of them) read this book and you will play chess beautifully and effortlessly . The only other book that may rival this one is My System by Aron Nimzowitch . My System is difficult to understand . Compared to it , I think Modern Chess Strategy is much simpler to read (concepts are very deep) and a better book as it discusses pawn structures in depth which is essential to understanding chess . Here concepts are presented clearly with examples . If you buy My System you need to buy Chess Praxis which is a practical demonstration of My System . For Modern Chess Strategy , only this single book is sufficient . Seriously , I cannot describe in mere words the greatness of this book . You have to read it to believe it . 5 stars -- Best of the best .
