Product Description
Here there be monsters!

What is a hero without monsters to vanquish? This book presents hundreds of different creatures for use in the Pathfinder Role playing Game. Within this tome you'll find fire-breathing dragons and blood-drinking vampires, vile demons and shape changing werewolves, sadistic goblins and lumbering giants, and so much more! Yet not all the creatures in this book are enemies, for some can serve lucky heroes as allies or advisors, be they summoned angels or capricious nymphs. And it doesn't stop there-with full rules for advancing monsters, adapting monsters to different roles, and designing your own unique creations, you'll never be without a band of hideous minions again!

The Pathfinder RPG Bestiary is the must-have companion volume to the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook. This imaginative tabletop game builds upon more than 10 years of system development and an Open Play test featuring more than 50,000 gamers to create a cutting-edge RPG experience that brings the all-time best-selling set of fantasy rules into the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference!   May 16, 2010
Rai (New Orleans, LA)
Even though the 3.5 Monster Manual and the subsequent 3.0 Monster Manuals will work with Pathfinder, this Bestiary is quite possibly the best monster reference for Pathfinder. It's definitely a necessary reference for DM's who run Pathfinder. This is a must have if you've bought the Core book!

4 out of 5 stars Way decent list of foes and 'allies' for any d20 rpg   April 8, 2010

This book has a few typos and I would have liked an extended list of dragons and 'were' creatures but they do put enough template information in so I can create my own weretiger and so on. The artwork is a mixed bag, some of it is disturbing at best, annoying at others but there is enough for someone to get the idea of what the monsters kinda look like but I'd go for the WOC 3.5 monster manual for the best artwork on the monsters. I did note that there are a lot of monsters from the MM2 and some I couldn't quiet pin. Unlike 4.e mm it does talk about some of the monsters behaviors, interactions and ecology rather then just a listing of stats that mean nothing beyond combat. It is pretty extensive and one probably won't need anything more then this as far as a mm goes, but I see that there are new mms coming out for pathfinders and I'm planning on getting them as this is some good stuff here and I like the cr levels. They help me gauge whether or not to use a certain monster at the time. So overall a good book with a few erros and iffy artwork and there is enough in the appendixes to assist you in making even more monsters, so this is a good deal overall and worth getting if you plan on having foes or whatever in your campaign.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Monster Fun   March 22, 2010
James D. Pierson (Long Beach, CA)
This is a great bestiary. I would recommend this book over the standard 3.5 Monster Manual any day. This book is so much easier to read and a lot easier to find stuff. I recently converted over to Pathfinder due to the fact that I have been with D&D since 1st edition and this captured the classic feel of the game more than any other licensed product out there. Castles and Crusades was too "lite" on the depth (but still a great game regardless) and Pathfinder really hit the spot for what I was looking for in old style D&D. This book is a testament to that. One thing for those wanting this book should know is this: Not all classic monsters will be found here and some will look different. This is either due to "product identity" or artist copyrights or something or another. Example is I noticed some of the classic dragons the heads were a bit different than I remembered them. The goblinoids have a more streamlined resemblance to one another and its classic and refreshing. So Bugbears, Hobgoblins, and Goblins will not look like the 3.5 counterparts at all. I think they look good however. The trolls aren't the rubbery carrot nosed ones of old, etc. etc. The cover is an example of those two I just stated. I also found surprises such as a couple of extra golems which I felt were no brainers such as ice and wood. All in all I was quite pleased with this book and other reviewers here did an excellent job on the details more than I have.

5 out of 5 stars Everything a monster book should be.   February 23, 2010

Paizo continues the strong launch of that Pathfinder Role-Playing Game with the Pathfinder Bestiary. While the Core Rulebook acted as a combination of the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide from its parent game Dungeons & Dragons, the Bestiary serves as a substitute for the Monster Manual, and shows how to do that style of book right.

The Monster Manuals of various D&D editions have always been a bit hit and miss. The 1st edition version had a lot of creativity and flavor in its entries, but lacked organization. The 2nd edition version was a treasure trove of information, but assumed that the reader was familiar with all the various D&D campaign settings, making it difficult to use some monsters in a house campaign. 3rd and 4th edition provided stats for the monsters but little flavor. Pathfinder, on the other hand, hits the right balance between stats, flavor, and accessibility. Each monster has a one- or two-page entry with its stat block and as much flavor text as could be placed in the book. Several recurring monster abilities, such as grab, as consolidated into universal rules, allowing more space and easier rules access from the GM. Once you're familiar with an ability, you can run all monsters that have that power easily.

While the layout and information on the monsters is excellent, the real prize in this book is the art. It contains the best art that has been in a Paizo book, which says quite a lot considering the high standards the company keeps. Each monster gets an illustration, and just looking at those pictures will give you some great inspiration for adventures.

With the addition of fourteen appendices which cover everything from indexing monsters by type, terrain, and challenge rating to creating monsters of your own, it's amazing how much Paizo managed to pack into this book. It is easily the best monster tome out there for a fantasy role-playing game, and along with the Core Rulebook it forms a solid backbone for what is shaping up to be one of the best games on the market.
