5 out of 5 stars ..all the negative points...   July 17, 2010
J. Duke (Vidor, TX)
If you're considering getting this edition. Do it. I've read all the negative points about this version. But I heard them all before when 3.0 came out. Nothing has changed, people will complain and then play it and start understanding how it works and start liking it. Like with 3.0. I was one of the people who refused to play third edition. And finally a friend convinced me to play it and i was amazed at how stupid I was for not updating sooner. And when i heard about 4th edition I had some apprehension but remembering my days when 3rd edition came out I gave it a chance and really enjoyed it. The biggest complaint I've read is no multiclassing, but there is. It's just not covered in the core player's handbook. Which is fine. I love 4e, it's faster paced. And as A DM I can spend more time preparing my STORY instead of having to stat everything out completely.

Remember, there's a famous quote, but a very important individual to D&D:

"The secret we should never let the gamemasters know is that they don't need any rules." - Gary Gygax. If you don't like the rules, honestly you don't need any of them.

It's collaborative storytelling. And 4e makes it much easier to do. Yes they 'dumbed' down the rules... You should read that as they made the rules much easier to interpret and follow. And guess what, GM's Fiat is the most important rule. It's easier to teach someone how to play 4e than 3rd. And about the compatibility issues from 3rd edition to 4e, if you can't convert your NPCs over then maybe you shouldn't be Dungeon Mastering. seriously, it's not hard. And no DM worth his weight in salt should have problems.

1 out of 5 stars Video Game in Book Format   July 7, 2010

I have played ALOT of online games and DnD 4th edition is literally a video game in book format. Great if you want to play a video game style RPG. Not so great if your a real avid gamer of days gone by and enjoy using your imagination and creative gaming. Every class is FORCED into a role, its a "fix" by the game designers.

Honestly this revamp was a ploy by the game owners to get more money by forcing everyone to buy new books. And to make the Dungeons and Dragons line their own they destroyed the previous game so they could make a new game then restamp it with the DnD logo and sell it to all us geeks.

That said it depend on you playstyle. Its NOT my cup of tea for sure. If you like playing a pen and paper game that plays just like your playing Everquest 2 then have fun with new game they call "DnD 4th edition".

5 out of 5 stars What the game should have always been.   June 25, 2010

I have played D&D through all editions of the game, and I have to say that this, by far, is my favorite. For those familiar with d20/3rd edition/3.5 edtion, know that this a radical departure in lots of ways, but after a quick run through of the player's handbook, you'll be right at home. I sat down at the game table for the first time in 8 years last night and did not feel like I missed a beat. It is a great system. You'll experience things in 4th edition you've never experienced before: entire game sessions without a rules book open on the table, combat encounters running start to finish without a pause to debate the finer points of some bizarre ability, and even creating balanced encounters for your party without play testing the night before!

In short, 4th edition does exactly want you want for your D&D group, it gives a solid, easy to follow framework for your adventures then gets out of the way - like rules should.

For all of the talk in other reviews of 4th edition being "roll play" and not roleplay or it being for power gamers, I don't buy it. Nothing in 4e prevents you from roleplaying and your groups adventures no more require lots of combat than any other edition. I really just can't see the gripe here. Creativity is still rewarded, the open world "I can do anything" possibilities still exist. I honestly think these people are playing a different game.

That being said, I do have one major gripe about 4e and it can be said of most iterations of the game - too many blasted book. 3 volumes of the player handbook, 2 dungeon masters guides, 3 monster manuals plus a metric ton of suppliments make being a completionist almost impossible. I also thought taking some of the "core" classes out of volume 1 of the player handbook and moving them to volume 2 was just plain cheap.

In short, if you want to play and have fun, if you want to bring your kids into the game, or if you don't have hours upon hours to prepare to play you simply cannot go wrong with this set especially at Amazon's price.

1 out of 5 stars 4e Gamer Review   June 5, 2010

The newest edition of the Dungeons and Dragons saga is simple. Convenient and expensive to attracted new players with new cash. But mechanically, the system is a step back in gamer evolution. It does cater to amine' fans and the WOW crowd. But doesn't offer the depth or insight experienced gamers crave. If you're new to Role-playing, start here. If you're an experienced gamers, this product is a flaccid, stinky bomb.

Synopsis - if you don't know what's good in RPG, this is a learning experience. If you're already experienced, pass on this product.
