5 out of 5 stars Great tips for players and DM's   August 23, 2010
J. Burgos (West Hollywood, CA United States)
Im new to D&D 4 but so far I've been really enjoying the articles on this book. It offers great tips for playing and maximizing your characters in game. I find the "what race" and "what class are you" quizzes to be particularly insightful for starting players who have no clue what the difference between a gnome, elf, dwarf or dragonborn are. I also like the background customization to be really nice to really make your character come to life. Overall I highly recommend this book for the players and DM's who put a bit more effort into their characters than the average player. Krahulik's art (from Penny Arcade fame) is really spot on and adds some nice comedic flavor to the book. Despite my misgivings I am glad this book is not a powermonger D&D manual.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting & Fun   July 12, 2010

Very interesting and fun guide. There are no new classes, powers or feats. What we have is a guide to role-playing in general, tactics, party balancing, and some power-gaming tips. The book is nicely balanced- both those that are heavily into Roleplaying and those into min-max PowerGaming will find something of interest.

A few quibbles- they suggest feats and Powers at time, but do not Source them. Yes, you can find them on-line by Searching, but this is a hard cover BOOK, thus the book should be sourced (e.g. "PHB, page 185").

Next they suggest some feats and powers for roles such as Controller, but most of those aren't really for Controllers in general, but for Wizards in specific- and since again, there's no sourcing, you can't find that out very easily. My Invoker feels left out!

I love the section and graphic for concentrating your attacks!

The "Cosmo-quiz" sections with stuff like "What Alignment are you?" can be a source of fun for the group, too. Useful for any roleplaying game, imho.

2 out of 5 stars D&D - The Tactical Miniatures Game   June 12, 2010

Yep, started playing this way back in 1977 in HS and loved it. Played in the hallways on the floor by an open locker with 5 others. Had a great teacher that "lent" us an empty classroom during lunch. Other rpg's took some attention away from this but D&D was always my first love. However...
Now it's nothing but miniature rules with some MMORPG thrown in. World of Warcraft and other MMO's stole a lot of players away from this franchise, and it's desperately trying to keep pace. Even the new Warhammer Fantasy succumbed to the grip of these online games. But Warhammer does it better by retaining the FUN that D&D has long since lost. There's no joy anymore in this for roleplayers - it's actually reverted back to the Chainmail days (but even that was fun because it was fresh at the time).
Stick with something like WH Fantasy for roleplaying goodness, and play D&D if you want a tepid fantasy tactics game.

5 out of 5 stars It's like Cosmo for DnD   June 10, 2010

This is Chad A Suttons wifey pooh Tyrwech- Stephanie . . . What Race are you? What Class are you? How do you take your tea? These are all very important questions to consider when building your character. You will find them in the Player's Strategy Guide. All in perfect girl cosmo magazine quiz like form. I'm totally stoked! I ended up assigning my husband a hunnydue homework assignment to go to games plus to get the PSG for me so I could it before trying to build my character for our new weekly game! More about the PGS and how its affecting game play at [...]

4 out of 5 stars Good even for the experienced.   June 2, 2010

I've been playing DnD for over twenty years now, and one would expect I wouldn't a guide like this by now.
But lets face it 4e changed DnD in a lot of ways (i think mostly for the better but opinons vary) and as someone who was kinda set in his way of thinking i needed a hand wrapping my head around the new paradigm.

This book helps with that. ALOT. Even if you mostly DM like i do.

The bit on party tactics and compostition were particularly helpful to me. You may get varying milage from the book off course depending on your experience level, i largely didn't need alot of the character background/story orriented stuff even though it akes up the lions share of the game time at my table. But the mechanical adice in there is going to help me make the fights run smotther and be both more challenging and more entertaining for my players.
